Ozone afterpurification of tap water

In order to understand necessity of additional purification of tap water, one should consider what stages of water cleaning undergoes before getting into the water pipeline. After coagulation and a filtration of suspended substances, water is usually sterilized by chlorination. The problem is that the water is exposed to chlorination when it still contains a large quantity of dissolved organic materials. In this case, only a small part of the whole available chlorine (less than 10%) will be engaged in useful water sterilization. The largest part thereof, however, will enter into reaction with dissolved organic substances, forming extremely toxic and carcinogenic chlororganic compounds, which furthermore dramatically deteriorate organoleptic quality of water (odor nuisance, irritation of eyes and mucous coats). These substances have carcinogenic effect not only at drink of tap water, but also penetrate through skin when taking bath or shower.

What is ozone water treatment required for?

Water ozonation is extremely efficient and safe method of removing dissolved organic compounds from water with simultaneous sterilization thereof. Ozone has reactionary and sterilizing ability that is thousands times greater than that of chlorine and is capable to oxidize harmful chlororganic compounds and to expel free chlorine. But at the same time ozone is an active form of usual oxygen, and reactions with ozone do not form new toxic compounds, but rather greatly speed up the natural process of oxidation by air oxygen. In addition, ozone dissolved in water is non-persistent and its lifetime does not exceed several minutes, whereupon ozone residues that did not enter reaction transform back into usual oxygen.

If using water ozonation along with a filtration through activated carbon, the oxidizing ability of ozone increases still more due to contact action of coal surface, what allows to oxidize even most stable chlororganic compounds. When surplus of ozone is added onto surface of activated carbon in relation to materials being oxidized, carbon acts as the catalytic agent and not as adsorbent, and does not lose its qualities while in service, requiring just periodic wash by a reversed flow of water.

Ability to delete dissolved organic and chlororganic compounds, leaving all inorganic salts required for a human being is a unique feature of ozone afterpurification technology of tap water that is hardly replaceable by other methods.
